The Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools or CGFNS was created in the year 1977 with the purpose of ensuring foreign nursing graduates, those immigrated to the US, possessed the knowledge they needed to work as a nurse in the US. The idea was to ensure that these nurses were adequately trained and that their knowledge was in line with US standards. This programme is comprised of three parts viz. credential review, English Proficiency Exam and the CGFNS Qualifying Exam which is again divided into two. A CGFNS Certificate is awarded only to those candidates who successfully complete all three portions of the process.
The CGFNS Qualifying Exam is a two-part exam where both parts are administered on the same day. Part one, called “Nursing, Part I”, is a 150 question multiple-choice test. This is the morning portion of the exam and it lasts 2’/2 hours. Part two, called “Nursing, Part II”, is a
121 question multiple-choice test. This after-lunch portion must be completed in 2 hours. Combined, these exams are designed to test a candidate’s nursing knowledge and predict their success on the NCLEX.
Who are eligible to take this?
First-level, general nurses who are educated outside the United States and who wish to practice nursing in the United States can take or are eligible for this test. A first-level, general nurse (as defined historically by the International Council of Nurses) is also known as a registered or a professional nurse in some countries.
Second-level nurses, who are not eligible to be licensed as registered nurses in the United States, are not eligible to take this test. A second-level nurse may be called an enrolled, vocational or practical nurse or a nurse assistant.
Requirements For taking a CGFNS you will need to submit various documents to prove your eligibility. They include Secondary School Information and Certificate, License / Registration / Diploma Information/certificates and a passport-style photograph. NCLEX (National Council Licensure Examination) is an examination for the licensing of nurses in the United States and Canada. There are two types, the NCLEX-RN and the NCLEX-PN. After graduation from a school of nursing, one takes the NCLEX exam to receive his or her nursing license. A nursing license gives an individual the permission to practice nursing, granted by the state where he or she meets the requirements.
National Council of State Boards of Nursing, Inc. (NCSBN) administers these examinations on behalf of its member boards which consist of the boards of nursing in the 50 US states, the District of Columbia, and four U.S. territories -American Samoa, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands and the Virgin Islands.
Things to take care when you appear for the Exam

- You must hold an acceptable ID
- You shall not bring any paper copy to the exam hall
- You may take off and keep your hats, scarves, gloves and coats outside of the testing room
- You have to arrive at the exam centre minimum half an hour before the exam.
- You will also have to provide your biometrics including signature, photograph and palm vein scan, etc.
Up to 6 hours are allotted to complete the RN exam and 5 hours for the PN exam, including the short tutorial and 2 optional breaks (the first 2 hours into testing, the second after 3.5 hours of testing). Take time to analyze each question carefully as there is no option available to return to the question you once submitted an answer.
